Electric Center’s Compliant Cable Commitment
The Aim of our Commitment
Throughout the UK, there is significant evidence to suggest that cable is entering the market which does not meet the industry standards. There are major risks involved with installing poor quality cable which could have potentially lethal consequences, making the installer liable to prosecution.
It has been estimated that at least 20% of cable in the UK market is non-compliant and that at least one quarter of all reported fires are related to faulty wiring.
Non-compliant and counterfeit cables are dangerous and can seriously damage a company’s reputation. At Electric Center, we endeavour to only supply cables that comply with the relevant legislation and industry standards so that our customers can be confident that the cable they are fitting is safe.
Our policy is to only use cable manufacturers and suppliers who can supply BASEC approved cables or, in the cases where BASEC approval isn’t required, cables which can be proven to meet the relevant BS, VDE or harmonised standards.
Our commitment is to work closely with all leading cable manufacturers and to jointly:
• Reduce the use of non-approved cable in the market
• Remove unsafe cable from the supply chain
• Stop deliberate sub-standard manufacturing of cable and ensure all manufacturers fully comply with UK standards and
regulations
• Push for more effective legislation, including proper marking of cable
• Report to authorities and take action against manufacturers who fail to mark cable correctly
• Investigate and provide assistance across the electrical supply industry
Guide To Cable Marking
Against growing concerns that sub-standard cable is being sold in the UK we would strongly recommend that when purchasing cable you should ensure that all cables have the following markings to signify to the buyer or installer that it’s an authentic product.
All good quality cables should show the markings illustrated below:
If it’s marked, it’s safe to use!
